There are as many as 277 fake engineering colleges functioning in India, with Delhi topping the list with 66 such fake institutes offering engineering and other technical courses.
Delhi is followed by Telangana with 35 fake colleges while West Bengal with 27 such colleges, shows the document tabled in the Lok Sabha on Monday by Minister of State Human Resource Development Satya Pal Singh.
The list also further includes Karnataka with 23 fake colleges, Uttar Pradesh with 22, Haryana with 18, Maharashtra with 16 and Tamil Nadu with 11 such colleges.

Singh, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, said that the institutions have been directed to take necessary All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approval, else they will be shut down.
